Sierra Leone’s Ambassador To Türkiye Congratulates Country On Victory Day Celebration, Extends Goodwill Message From President Julius Maada Bio
Ankara, Turkiye, Tuesday 30 August 2022 - Sierra Leone’s ambassador to Türkiye, Momahed Hassan Kai-Samba, has congratulated the government and people of the Republic of Türkiye on their Victory Day Celebration, and has extended goodwill message from His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio to his colleague and brother, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye.
Victory Day, also known as Turkish Armed Forces Day, is a public holiday in Türkiye commemorating the decisive victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar, on 30 August 1922. It is the last battle in the Turkish War of Independence. Victory Day has been celebrated as an official holiday since 1926 and was first celebrated on 30 August 1923.
Türkiye was occupied by allied forces after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War (1914-1918).
The foreign occupation prompted Türkiye’s War of Independence in 1919, in which Turkish forces -- led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk -- eventually drove the invaders from Anatolia.
