Sierra Leone Deputy Ambassador To Türkiye Paul A.S Minah Engages Turkish Presidency For Migration Management, Who Confirms Sierra Leoneans Are The Least In Detention Centers

Ankara, Türkiye, Tuesday 9 July 2023 - The Deputy Ambassador of Sierra Leone to Türkiye, Paul A.S Minah has engaged the Presidency of the Turkish Migration Management, and has said that immigration related offences are as old as human history; where the Turkish authorities confirmed Sierra Leoneans being the least number of foreign nationals in detention.

The Presidency of Migration Management (PMM) is the administrative, legislative, and operational central-governmental authority responsible for overall migration and international protection affairs in Türkiye. It is tasked with coordination of international labor, education, health, social policy, and security related issues affecting migration in the country.

Ambassador Minah told the meeting that the Sierra Leone Mission in Türkiye has on countless number of times visited its citizens in detention center across the country, adding that such visits have led to the self-deportation of many of his nationals.

“We will continue to engage our citizens to see the need to be repatriated, one thing we can’t do as an embassy is to force them to be deported. My Ambassador and I will continue to engage them, this I think will be a win-win situation for our two friendly countries”, Ambassador Minah assured.

The Directorate General of Combatting Irregular Migration and Removal Affairs in the Turkish Presidency for Migration Management, Ramazan SEÇİLMİŞ, thanked the leadership of the Sierra Leone Mission in Türkiye for their continued cooperation on areas of mutual respect, saying that there were at least 310 Sierra Leoneans citizens in detention across Türkiye, who he said committed mainly immigration related issues.

Ramazan SEÇİLMİŞ confirmed that Sierra Leoneans citizens are the least nationals held in detention “Our target as a country as a country is to be able to send all illegal immigrants back their respective countries”, he noted. To deal with different forms of immigrants in Türkiye, various laws and regulations have been established since. Most were within the framework of EU, decisions by the European Court of Human Rights against Türkiye, and reports of rights violations from national and international civil society actors.
